State Specialists Are On The Job When Wildlife Becomes A Problem

Presented by Reagan Harris, WDFW Wildlife Conflict Specialist

What do you do when you have an injured deer in your front yard? Or if you have a bear that has taken a sudden interest in your garbage cans? Maybe you have a family of raccoons that decided they will be living under your porch rent-free?

As a Wildlife Conflict Specialist with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), Reagan Harris is one of 17 wildlife biologists across the state that handle these situations daily.

From raptors to moose, Reagan works with landowners to mitigate a full spectrum of wildlife damage scenarios. She will be talking about a day in the life of a Wildlife Conflict Specialist, the types of calls that are received, and how they are handled.

Born and raised in Snohomish County, Reagan moved east of the Cascades in 2015 to attend the University of Idaho where she received her B.S. in wildlife resources. Since graduating, she has held a variety of different wildlife jobs including working with Mexican wolves and greater sage-grouse.

Reagan has been working for WDFW in Eastern Washington for four years in several different capacities, all of which have involved assisting landowners with wildlife damage concerns. She moved to Spokane County in 2024 to take over as the Wildlife Conflict Specialist serving Spokane, Lincoln, and Whitman Counties.
