Moose on the loose in Washington

Presented by Matt Brinkman, WDFW

While once a rare species in Washington, moose are now relatively abundant in the northeastern part of the state and are often observed within the urban and suburban areas of Spokane.

Matt Brinkman, a wildlife biologist with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), will present the history of the moose population in Washington, provide background information on their biology and ecology, and discuss some of WDFW moose management strategies. He will also present an update about an ongoing moose research project in northeastern Washington and will provide information on ways to stay safe and prevent conflict when encountering these large ungulates.

Matt’s career has spanned three state agencies, over a decade with a non-profit wildlife conservation organization, and wildlife degrees from two universities. He has worked on a wide range of species, from small birds like the golden-winged warbler, to charismatic megafauna such as moose, elk, and cougars. When he is not working, he is usually outdoors hunting, fishing, camping, foraging for wild mushrooms and berries, or taking photos of wildlife.
