Dishman Hills Conservancy (Wilson Property) Field Trip

  • Spokane Audubon Society (map)

Leader: Alan McCoy

Trip Description: This is a new trip for Spokane Audubon. It is about a 2.5-to-3-mile hike through varied habitat from moist, north facing Douglas Fir to an Aspen grove to south facing Ponderosa Pine. There is a 300-foot elevation gain to the top with nice views to the south of Palouse country. This is a rich area and a great time of year for birding. Much of the birding will be by ear as in this habitat getting good views is not so easy.

Come prepared for: It may be a bit buggy so you might want to bring bug spray. Bring water and snacks. I will bring bear spray in the very unlikely event we encounter a cougar (which has been spotted on the property by a trail cam!)

Contact Alan (509) 999-9512 voice or text or email ahm2352@gmail.com to register for the trip. Please sign up by May 25th.

This trip is limited to 8 birders.

Where and When to Meet: The Wilson property is a recent addition to the Dishman Hills Conservancy and is located about ¾ mile from the Stevens Creek trailhead off the Palouse Highway. Starting from 57th Ave head south on the Palouse Highway. Go about 2.4 miles to Willow Springs Rd. Turn left (east) on Willow Springs Rd and drive to the end of the road. Google coordinates: 47.569806, -117.314139

The gate to the property will be open. Drive up the gravel driveway to the parking area. I want to start walking pretty close to 7 am so please arrive on time. The ending time depends on how the birding is but 11 am sounds about right.

Target Species:
Flycatchers, warblers, woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, thrushes, vireos.
