This is a class about how to use the popular electronic birding tools Merlin and eBird effectively and responsibly. Created by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, both play an increasingly prevalent role in the modern birding scene. EBird is a citizen science project designed to allow anyone to record and share their sightings to a broad audience online, while simultaneously providing scientific insight. Merlin uses the information provided by EBird to aid in both visual and auditory identification. Both tools can be very valuable tools for birding when used correctly. 

This class will be a combination of classroom instruction and field time so you can start using your new skills right away.

Cost: Free for current members of Spokane Audubon Society/ $20 for non-members

Restroom access: Porta potties available

Indoor portion of class will be conducted the educational center at Turnbull. Outdoor time will consist of walking short distances on flat, established trails.

About your instructor: Will Merg has been birding using the tools provided by EBird for 7 years. Will has been lucky enough to bird some wonderful places like Costa Rica, Yucatán Mexico, south Texas, southeast Arizona, and all across the West. He has observed 741 species of birds. Will is heavily interested in nature and conservation, especially of birds, and hopes to pursue an education and career in such.
