Helping Our Flying Friends in the Winter

We can help birds by feeding them this food, especially in winter. Here are some seeds that various birds like: nyjer seeds and black sunflower seeds. They also eat berries and fruit they find, and some eat bugs. Higher fat seeds can help them stay warm. Good nutrition for our flying friends is important.

IMPORTANT!!!!! -- if you are feeding birds out of a feeder, make sure to clean it to help keep birds healthy.

Spent flowers, which are flowers that are done blooming and do not attract pollinators anymore, can be good sources of food for our flying friends.  So please leave these flowers to help the birds.

Leaf piles are good for birds because they provide shelter and food for different species. They help protect birds from bad weather and predators such as cats. They are a place for bugs and some birds eat these bugs. A lot of people don't know this please tell everyone you know, like I do.

Heated bird baths can provide warm water that doesn’t freeze for drinking. To help keep it safe for our flying friends we can place large rocks in the bath. We dont want them to take a bath because the flying friend will get wet and on a cold day the water will freeze on their feathers and cause them to not be able to fly. This puts them at risk to not be able to get away from predators.

You can also place a bird drinking dish outside but bring it in at night clean it and put it out in morning.
