Donations are urgently needed to help repair damage to the Birds of Prey Northwest bird sanctuary. A late December windstorm caused extensive damage to this vital raptor rehabilitation center.
Executive Director, Janie Veltkamp founded Birds of Prey Northwest 32 years ago and has rescued and rehabbed hundreds of raptors, falcons and owls. Spokane Audubon’s Save-a-Bird rescue team works in concert with her on bird capture and transport. Our local raptor veterinarian, Dr. Schrag of Hunter Vet Clinic, works closely with Veltkamp on rehabbing Bald and Golden Eagles, Great-horned and other owls, falcons and accipiters.
The storm knocked down many trees and branches, damaging or destroying multiple aviaries. Veltkamp’s home was also damaged when a large tree fell on her bedroom during the storm. Luckily, she was away, doing an outreach program when the tree fell. Some of the rescued birds escaped and some were trapped in damaged cages. Refuge staff and volunteers worked to rescue them.
A group of local volunteers has already begun removing debris and preparing to repair or rebuild aviaries.
They urgently need your help to restore the habitats and care for the affected wildlife. Please consider sending donations to support recovery efforts. Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference for the birds and their home. Thank you for your generosity.
